1-bit 2.2 is on the App Store. Same URL, new build, free update.
The codename comes from The Inner Light, the 1992 Star Trek: The Next Generation episode in which Picard lives a whole life on a lost world and comes back with its music. A nod to Sir Patrick Stewart, and to the light in the new Now Playing: its glass, and the threads of light that trace the music along the timeline.
What’s new
.m3u and .m3u8 files in your bridge’s library come in as playlists after a sync, and any playlist exports as M3U8 from its menu. Also in 2.2
Home Screen quick actions: press and hold the 1-bit icon to search, shuffle your favorites or your whole library, or play the album or playlist you played most recently.
And on the bridge side
Bridge 0.2.2 came out the day before the app, and most of 2.2’s new tricks lean on it.
The bridge can be the player now: on a Linux box with a USB DAC it plays your FLAC, WAV, AIFF and ALAC files itself, at the file’s own rate and bit depth. On a box that already plays through MPD, under Volumio or moOde for instance, it tells the app about that player, its DAC and the format reaching it. Favorites and playlists carry revisions, the playlist files in your library reach the app, Linux gets a one-line installer, and the DLNA listener no longer answers on the bridge’s Tailscale address.
None of it is required. 2.2 still works with bridge 0.2.1: the wire protocol is still v1, and nothing needs re-pairing. The bridge’s own player, the box’s MPD player, playlist files and hearts that stay removed are what wait for 0.2.2. Read what’s new in 0.2.2 before you update a bridge: a hand-edited bridge.yaml is read more strictly.
Same audio path
No transcoding. No resampling. No mixer in the path. DSD still goes out as DoP to your USB DAC, and PCM still goes out at the file’s own sample rate. When you cast, the player fetches the music straight from your bridge or media server, and the iPhone stays out of the audio path. With everything left at its defaults, the bytes that reach your DAC are the bytes in your files. How DSD playback is handled →
The down-to-earth version
If you already have 1-bit: open the App Store and tap update. Your sources, bridges, folders, playlists, hearts, downloads and settings all carry over, and there is nothing to re-pair. Now Playing opens as a Card; the artwork button switches it to Full Screen. If you run a bridge, update it too.
If you are new: it is a free download for iPhone and iPad, iOS 26.1 or later. Bring a NAS, a bridge, a UPnP server, or just a folder of files on the phone, plus a USB DAC for bit-exact DSD. Or add the demo library from Sources and borrow mine for an evening.
Seven of the DAC profiles in this release came from people using the app. Thank you, and keep them coming.
