Short version: for the same recording, DSD is not reliably "better" than good high-resolution PCM — and it isn't snake oil either. It's a legitimate format whose real advantages have more to do with how records get made and filtered than with the 1-bit encoding itself. Let's actually look at the evidence.
What blind listening tests show
The uncomfortable finding for format warriors: in controlled, level-matched, double-blind tests, most listeners cannot reliably tell high-resolution audio from CD-quality, let alone DSD from PCM. A well-known 2007 study (Meyer & Moran, published in the Journal of the Audio Engineering Society) inserted a 16-bit/44.1 kHz conversion into SACD playback and found listeners couldn't hear it.
It's not the whole story, though. A 2016 meta-analysis (Reiss, also JAES) pooled many studies and concluded that trained listeners, under ideal conditions, could distinguish hi-res from standard at a small but statistically real rate. So: differences can exist at the margins, but they're subtle, training-dependent, and far smaller than marketing suggests. Whichever study you favour, "night and day" it is not.
The engineering case against 1-bit
There's a serious technical argument that DSD is, by measurement, the weaker format. Because a 1-bit quantiser has only two states, it cannot be properly dithered, which can leave faint idle tones, and its noise shaping dumps a great deal of ultrasonic noise just above the audible band. Engineers like Benchmark's John Siau argue that modern multi-bit delta-sigma converters are simply cleaner — lower noise, no idle tones, better linearity. The genuine case for DSD
And yet DSD persists, for reasons that are real even if they aren't "1-bit is magic":
- Gentle reconstruction filters. DSD nudges designers away from steep brick-wall digital filters and their pre-ringing — the strongest sonic argument, and one you can read more about in DSD vs PCM.
- Excellent transfers. Many analog-tape masters were transferred to DSD with great care; the master is often superb, and DSD is the form it ships in.
- The catalogue. The SACD/DSD world is full of lovingly mastered classical and jazz titles that don't exist in better form anywhere else.
- Recording discipline. DSD's un-editability pushes engineers toward minimal-processing, well-placed-microphone recordings — and those often just sound wonderful.
Why people genuinely hear a difference
Listeners who swear DSD sounds better usually aren't imagining it — but the cause is rarely the format itself:
- Different master. The DSD release was often mastered differently (and frequently better) than the CD — a real audible difference that has nothing to do with 1-bit.
- Different DAC filter. DSD and PCM can engage different filters in your DAC, which changes the sound.
- Level mismatch. Even a 0.5 dB level difference makes the louder one seem "better." Tests that don't level-match are worthless.
- Expectation bias. Knowing you're hearing the "hi-res" version measurably shifts perception. This is exactly why blind, level-matched testing exists.
The honest conclusion
DSD is a fine format with real strengths (filtering philosophy, superb catalogue and transfers) and real weaknesses (un-editable, no dither, ultrasonic noise). What dominates how music actually sounds, roughly in order: the recording and master, then your speakers/headphones and room, then your DAC — and only then, far down the list, the format.
So the smart posture isn't to pick a team. It's to buy each album in whatever version is best mastered — sometimes DSD, sometimes hi-res PCM, sometimes a plain CD rip — and play all of it bit-exact so the format is never the variable you're fighting.
