DSD audio almost always arrives in one of three containers: .dsf, .dff, or a SACD ISO. The 1-bit data inside is the same idea in all three — the differences are about metadata, channels, and convenience.
.dsf — the one you want
DSF (DSD Stream File) is Sony's format and the de-facto standard for downloads and rips. Its key advantage: it carries proper metadata and embedded album art (ID3-style tags), so your library shows artists, albums, and covers like any modern format. It's the most widely supported format across players and the one you should prefer when you have a choice.
.dff — the production format
DFF (DSDIFF, "DSD Interchange File Format") is the older Philips format, built for the studio and SACD authoring. The practical catch is tagging: standard DFF has no agreed way to store metadata or artwork, so DFF files often show up as bare filenames with no cover. You'll see DFF from older downloads and from SACD extractions. It can also hold DST-compressed audio (see below).
SACD ISO — the whole disc in one file
A SACD ISO isn't a track format at all — it's a complete image of a Super Audio CD. One ISO typically contains the stereo DSD program and, often, a multichannel (5.1) program, plus the disc's metadata. It's how people archive SACDs they own.
The downside is that an ISO isn't directly portable — most mobile players won't open one. The
usual workflow is to extract the tracks to tagged .dsf files with a
tool like sacd_extract / ISO2DSD, then play those. Note that ripping SACDs
sits in a legal grey area that varies by country; the common practice is personal backup of discs
you actually own.
DST compression
DST (Direct Stream Transfer) is lossless compression for DSD, used to fit
multichannel programs onto a physical SACD and sometimes found inside DFF/ISO. It's bit-for-bit
lossless, but computationally heavy to decode — one of the reasons DSD never
suited streaming. Most plain .dsf downloads are uncompressed and just play.
One thing that is NOT a file format: DoP
You'll also see DoP (DSD over PCM) mentioned. That's not a file you store — it's
the transport that carries DSD bits to a USB DAC, especially on iOS. Your files stay
.dsf/.dff; DoP is just how the player ships them to the converter. More

What to actually do
- Prefer .dsf for anything going into your day-to-day library — tags, art, and the widest compatibility.
- Have .dff? It plays fine; you may just need to add tags yourself, or convert to .dsf to fix metadata.
- Have an ISO? Extract the stereo program to
.dsffor portable, tagged playback. Keep the ISO as your archive master if you want the multichannel mix too.
